A Closer Look at AA Medallions From Around the World

Alcoholics Anonymous has been running since 1935 when it started with two men in Ohio who were seeking sobriety. Today, there are more than 2 million members across 180 countries.

According to studies, the AA approach to recovery has been proven to be the most successful at achieving abstinence. This is due primarily to the social aspect of it, which serves as a recovery support network.

When a recovering addict reaches a sobriety milestone, they are rewarded with different AA medallions for each one. If this sounds interesting to you, keep reading as we have a look at AA tokens from around the world.

Types of AA Medallions

AA chips come in several materials, all with a different price range. However, entry-level AA tokens are made of plastic and don't cost the meeting a lot of money to stock up on. This way, each recovering addict who celebrates a milestone with their peers at a meeting gets honored with free sobriety chips.

Other materials used are aluminum, bronze, brass, and even gold- or silver-plated. You can even get some extra unique AA coins with crystals embedded. Each token will have the milestone etched into it, so you know which one is for which occasion.

Milestones celebrated by AA members are:

  • 24 hours
  • 30 Days
  • 60 Days
  • 90 Days
  • 4 Months
  • 5 Months
  • 6 Months
  • 7 Months
  • 8 Months
  • 9 Months
  • 10 Months
  • 11 Months
  • 1 Year

Tokens in the USA

There are some beautiful collectors tokens available online in the United States. Good quality AA medallions can retail for around $15. Some notable ones are:

AA "We Are Not Cured" Daily Reprieve Coin (Pg 85)

This beautiful token is made from enamel, gold plated with a smooth epoxy finish. What makes this one a unique coin is a message embossed onto it, which is a quote from the Big Book on page 85. The primary message is that we are never cured of alcoholism but rather offered daily reprieves.

AA "Recovery Angel" BSP Tri-Plate Medallion

This Bright Star Press medallion is gold, nickel, and enamel plated. It displays an image of an angel on one side and a message embossed on the other. However, this coin is too thick to use the standard coin stands, so it's recommended for use with the keychain or necklace holders.

Tokens in Europe

Europe has some unique AA medallions available. These AA tokens retail for £4.50. Some of our favorites are:

"Footprints in the Sand" Medallion

A beautifully minimalist coin featuring an embossed image of waves on a beach with footprints leading away into the distance. On the back is the message, "When you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."

"Three Years Sober" Achievement Coin

This is a fun little handmade token depicting the words "Three Years Sober" on a beautiful orange sunset behind a silhouette of pine trees. Handmade coins can be a special gift but also retail at a higher cost. This one is around £24.50.

What Are Your Favorite AA Medallions?

AA Medallions can serve as a potent reminder of just how far the recovering addict has come. When given as a gift, it's a great way to show someone you're supporting them in their recovery journey. You can purchase them with display stands if you want to display them or keyrings that the AA coins can clip into.
