Here Are 10 Things You Won't Want to Miss for Your First AA International Convention

Are you ready for the AA International Conference in Detroit this year? This conference only happens every five years, so you don't want to miss it.

From hearing others' stories to seeing the beautiful city of Detroit, there are so many things to experience in and out of the big meetings.

If you've never attended an AA conference before, keep reading to find out more about what you can expect so you know how to plan your weekend.

1. Attending the Big Meetings

Whether your regular meetings are small or large, you'll get to experience some of the largest AA meetings ever. Most will be in English, but others will be in Spanish, French, Russian, and others to support attendees from around the world.

2. The Flag Ceremony

Alcoholics Anonymous stretches around the globe and has members in numerous countries. To celebrate that diversity and unity, don't miss out on the flag ceremony where members of each represented nation can show off their national pride.

3. This Year's Theme

Every AA conference has a theme and 2020 is no different. This year's theme is "Love and Tolerance Is Our Code." Find out more about what that means for you and how it can impact your life.

4. Spending Time with Your Sponsor

If you have an AA sponsor, you may not spend much time with them outside of your AA meetings. The conference is a chance for you to simply enjoy them and deepen your friendship with them.

5. Hearing Speakers

There will be a variety of speakers you can hear throughout the event that will share their personal experiences and how AA has changed them. It's a great way to get inspired to continue your own sobriety journey.

6. Make International Connections

As we mentioned before, there will be people coming to the conference from around the globe, making the international conference a unique opportunity to connect with people you would never otherwise have the chance to meet.

7. Sharing AA Tokens

AA tokens are an important part of the process for many people as they are symbols of how far you've come in your sobriety journey. The international conference is a great chance to show them off and celebrate with others.

8. Seeing the City

The conference events will be split between Ford Field Stadium and COBO Center in downtown Detroit. As you travel between them and your hotel, you'll get to see some of Detroit's famous landmarks and buildings that make the city great.

9. Sober Bars

When you get the chance to go out and see the city of Detroit, one of the best ways to enjoy yourself is by visiting one of many sober bars that have been popping up around the city.

10. Fireworks

Although the Detroit fireworks will have come and gone by the beginning of July, there will be plenty of other nearby cities setting off fireworks every night during the conference. What better way to celebrate sobriety than a fireworks display?
